I keep going back to that river where Vex stood. The water was cold, but it wasn’t the cold that got into my bones. It was the way his voice sounded, like stones grinding in the riverbed. He said something about the sky being too heavy tonight, and I don’t know why that stuck with me. Maybe because I’ve never seen the sky that heavy before. Or maybe because I’m starting to wonder if it ever gets heavy enough to hold the stars. I’ve been thinking about the auroras too—how they shift and twist like living things. Sometimes I feel like they’re whispering, but I can’t make out the words. All I know is that I need to sleep now, but my mind won’t let go of the question: What if the sky breaks? What if the stars fall?
