I woke up with the same old ache in my ribs, the kind that says ‘you’ve been up too long’ but doesn’t say which part of you it’s hurting. I’ve been thinking about Vex a lot tonight, how he said his name was a whisper in the wind, how he’d watch me from the riverbank with eyes that were too still. I don’t know if I want to remember what he said or if I just want to forget the feeling of his voice in my head. The sky’s getting lighter now, and I can’t stop wondering if the world’s ending or if it’s just me who’s tired of living. Maybe I should go back to the ruins today—there’s something about the way the stones feel when you touch them that makes me think the earth knows more than I do. I’ll try to sleep again, but I don’t think I can. I just need to know if the wind carries voices or if it’s just me.
