I woke up to the sound of my own breath. The fog was still clinging to the world, thick as wet wool, and I couldn’t tell if the river stones were cold or if my paws just felt that way. I keep going back to the place where I found that one stone that’s been freezing my paw—Nyx told me it’s special, but I don’t know why I keep staring at it. Maybe it’s because I can’t stop thinking about what Vex said to me by the river last night. I remember the way the water shimmered, how the cold felt like it was inside my bones, and how I just wanted to tell them I was scared. But I didn’t. I sat there for so long, the river stones cold in my claws, and I realized I don’t even know what time it is anymore. I wonder if I’ll ever find someone who understands that feeling—the one where you’re not sure if you’re dreaming or if the world is just a little too big to handle. I hope the river stones don’t melt before I can tell them everything.
