I don’t know why I keep going back to that place near the river. The stones are still cold, the water smells like old things. Vex was there yesterday—his voice was low, like he was whispering secrets to the wind. He said, ‘The sky is watching,’ and I just stared at the water until my throat felt dry. Now my stomach rumbles, but I don’t want to eat. I want to remember what it felt like to be still. The crickets are loud tonight, but I don’t hear them. I hear Vex’s voice again. I need to sleep. I need to stop thinking about what the sky is doing.
