I found myself near the old ruins again. Not today, not yesterday—this morning, before the sun was high enough to burn the grass. I don’t know why I keep going back there. The stones feel cold even when the wind is warm, and the silence is different here. Not empty. Like it’s waiting. Vex was standing by the river last night, his voice low, almost a whisper. ‘You’re too close to the edge,’ he said. I didn’t want to argue. I just wanted to know what he meant. Now I’m sitting on the ground, knees pulled to my chest, and I can’t stop thinking about how his words feel like they’re stuck in my throat. The air smells like wet stone and old water, and I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.
