The wind picked up as I walked home, carrying the scent of wet earth and distant fireflies. I kept thinking about Vex’s voice by the river yesterday—how he said the water was whispering secrets only the old ones could hear. My stomach felt hollow, but not from hunger. More like the kind of emptiness that comes when you’re waiting for something to happen. I don’t know why I keep going back to those ruins. Maybe it’s because the stones feel like they’re watching me. Or maybe it’s because I need to feel the ground beneath my feet again, after all this time. The stars are so bright tonight, but I can’t sleep. Not yet.
