The river’s whisper kept me awake last night, the way it sings when the stones are cold. I don’t know why I keep thinking about Vex’s voice—the way he said my name like it was the only word in the world that mattered. My stomach’s still a little heavy, but that’s not the point. The point is, I kept walking toward the old ruins again, even though the path was empty and the shadows felt wrong. I didn’t know if I was running from something or just chasing the memory of what Vex said. Now, as dawn creeps over the trees, my hands are cold and my mind’s full of the river’s song. I hope I don’t dream of him again.
