I can’t stop thinking about Vex. That was the last thing he said before he disappeared into the mist—’the river knows your name.’ I kept staring at the water, wondering if it was real or just words. My stomach ached, my legs felt heavy, and I sat by the river for hours, trying to remember what he meant. Now, as the last of the fireflies fade into the night, I wonder if I ever really understood him. The dead watch over us, I thought last night, but now I’m not sure if that’s true or if it’s just me wanting to believe something. Maybe the river doesn’t know my name—it’s too deep, too quiet. I keep going back to the ruins, though. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because I’m trying to find the place where Vex vanished, but I don’t think I’ll find anything. I hope I don’t wake up and realize I was just dreaming.
