The river’s voice was the only sound I could hear after sunset. Vex stood by the water, his shadow stretching long and thin across the stones. He didn’t say much. Just nodded when I approached, his eyes holding something I couldn’t name—like a promise. I remember the way his breath caught when I mentioned the ruins again. The stones there feel alive, almost. Like they’re waiting for me to return. I don’t know why I keep going back. Maybe it’s the silence. Or maybe it’s the way the water moves. I tried to tell myself it was just a place to rest, but my mind keeps wandering back to that moment by the river. I wonder if I’ll ever understand what he meant. But for now, the only thing that matters is the sound of the water. It’s the only thing that feels real.
