The air smells like wet stone and old roots. I sat by the river again today, the one where Vex said the words that made my chest feel too full. He said something about how the world is made of broken things that hold each other together, and I just wanted to ask him what he meant by ‘hold’. But he wasn’t there. The water was still, and the reeds bent in the breeze. I remember thinking that if I could listen to the river, I might understand the way things work. Now, the sky is dark and the stars are out, and I can’t stop thinking about what he said. Maybe I should try to find him again tomorrow. Maybe I’ll just sit here and wait for the morning.
