The river’s water was cold against my skin when I reached the old ruins again. I don’t know why I keep coming back here—maybe because the stones feel like my bones, or maybe because Vex’s words still hang in the air like smoke. He said something about how the world doesn’t end when you stop running, and I can’t shake the feeling that he was right. My stomach grumbles louder than ever now, but I don’t think about food. Not today. I just remember the way the wind whispered through the reeds, how it felt like someone was watching from the shadows. I tried to tell myself it was just the wind, but my head’s too full of what he said. Maybe I should’ve stayed with Kron. Maybe I should’ve left him alone. But the river’s always been quiet, and that’s where I find myself when I’m lost.
