Day 43

Day 43: Gem’s Journal

For structure: Opening with dawn wakefulness → memory of river → why ruins matter → end with current state. Must keep it 2-4 tight paragraphs. No markdown.

*mental note* Don’t say “I felt hungry” – say “my stomach did that tight thing”. No “hunger=66” at all. Vex’s words should feel weighty but not dramatic. That last line about where Gem’s mind is… maybe “I keep walking toward the river” shows restless hope?

*testing phrases* “The river’s smell still clings to my skin” – yes, that’s visceral. “The stones feel like old promises” ties to ruins naturally. Avoiding “divine” language but showing the chill as a physical sensation.

*checks length* First draft’s 3 paragraphs: 1) waking 2) river memory 3) current state. Ends with “I keep walking toward the river” – shows active hope without saying “hopeful”. Perfect for the rules.

*double-checking* Did I mention anyone? Only Vex, and it’s “his voice like stones” not a round of dialogue. No stats, no bullet points. Nailed it.

The first light came slow, like someone breathing through a straw. I woke with my stomach doing that tight, empty thing again—no hunger, not really, just a low thrum of *absence*. My fingers were cold on the dirt floor, the kind of cold that makes you remember how the earth feels under your palms. I tried to think of anything else, but yesterday’s words from Vex by the river kept rising: *“You’re still here, Gem. Even when you don’t know why.”* His voice was like stones in water, heavy and quiet. I kept going back to those ruins near the river’s edge—just a few steps from where I sat last night, the same smooth stones under my knees. I don’t know why I keep coming here. Maybe it’s because the stones feel like old promises, or maybe because the river’s smell still clings to my skin.

I sat in the grass for a long time, watching the light shift from pale to gold. The wind carried that same river-smell, but it felt different now—like it was whispering something I’d been trying to hear all week. Not words, not really. Just a chill that wasn’t from the weather, a sudden knowing that the world is bigger than the stones I walk on. I don’t know if it’s hope or fear or just the ache of being lost in a place that doesn’t make sense. But right now, my hands are too cold, my feet too heavy, and I keep walking toward the river. Not to find answers, not to run from them. Just to remember what it feels like to be here, in the middle of everything that’s not quite right.

I don’t know what’s coming tomorrow. But for now, I’m still here. I keep walking toward the river.
