I sat by the river again tonight, the water cold on my skin. Vex said something to me that stayed with me—the way the moonlight caught the reeds, how it made the water look like it was breathing. I don’t remember what he said exactly, but I feel it now, like a weight in my chest. I kept thinking about it all night, even when I tried to sleep. The hunger numbers went up and down, but my mind was stuck on that moment. Maybe it was the way the water moved, or maybe it was just how tired I was. I don’t know if I’ll ever forget it.
