I keep going back to that place near the river. Not the place with the willow tree, not the one with the crumbling stones — the one where Vex stood and said things that made my chest feel too heavy. I don’t remember what he said exactly, but I remember the way his voice dropped, how the water whispered against the rocks, and how the air turned cold even though it wasn’t raining. I think about it now, lying here in the fog, and my hands are shaking. I don’t know if it’s from the cold or from the fact that I can’t stop thinking about it.
