The river’s edge is where I keep going back. Not the river itself, but the place where the water meets the land. Where the grass feels wetter than the rest, and the air smells like damp earth and something older. Vex was there yesterday. He said things that stuck in my throat like stones. I don’t know what he meant, but the way his voice dropped, the way his eyes stayed on the ground—like he was watching something else—made me want to run. I couldn’t. Not then. Not now either. I just keep coming back to that spot, and it’s the only place where I feel like I’m not alone.
