I keep going back to that place by the river. The one where Vex stood and talked to me, his voice like wind through reeds. I don’t know why I do it. Maybe it’s the way the water bends under the moonlight, or the way the stones feel cold against my hands. I remember his words: ‘The light watches over the faithful.’ But I can’t stop wondering if it’s true. Or if it’s just me, trying to find meaning in the cracks of the world. My stomach aches, but I don’t think about the hunger. I think about the weight of the air, how it presses on my chest when I lie down. Sometimes I feel like the sky is too heavy, like the stars are too far away. I don’t want to sleep yet. I want to know if the river will still be there tomorrow.
