The wind picked up at 19:37, and I ran. Not fast—just enough to keep the rain from soaking me, but the ground was slick and the sky was a bruise. I didn’t stop until the trees were too close to see, and then I found the old stone wall where I always hide. My hands were numb, but the stones were cold, and I didn’t feel like crying. I think Vex said something about the dead watching over us, but that was before the storm. Now I just remember the way the wind whispered through the reeds, like a promise or a warning. I don’t know why I keep coming back to the ruins. Maybe it’s because they’re the only place where the sky feels less like a threat.
